More organized labor needs to get additional people after the recession hurt it very much. America’s leading growth industry is being observed by numerous. Even the Teamster Union, also injured within the recession, is looking there. The Associated Press reports the harvesting business of Marijuana is what Teamsters is looking toward now.
Teamsters will unionize marijuana growers
In September, Teamsters picked up 40 new members, all of them marijuana growers. There is no proof, however many assume the members must mostly be from California. This is because in the whole nation, California has probably the most permissive medical cannabis laws. A lot of people don’t know how Teamsters plans to work anything out. The biggest concern is how it will protect members that are committing crimes by growing.
The AP talked to Lou Marchetti, who works with Teamsters local 70 with newly signed growers, who said that when he joined about 34 years ago, he didn’t think he’d work with cannabis workers.
“This is a whole new ballgame,” he said.
Any enterprise that Teamsters think is breaking the law will not be a part of the company. Marchetti made this very clear when talking about farmers in California.
More work with Marjyn Investments LCC for Teamsters
Marjyn Investments LCC works with gardening, trimming and cloning. The company also works to show patients how they can grow marijuana plants if they are medical weed patients. The Teamsters Union works with contracts. They began the two year contract. Benefits were added also. These contain pensions, paid vacations and health insurance. Teamsters Local 70 explains that within the next 15 months, wages will go from $18 to $25.75 per hour.
Getting troubles with growing pot out of the system
States like California go against federal law in allowing marijuana plants to be grown for medical reasons. It is possible for the federal government to start looking into Marjyn Investments a little more. If this were to happen, Marchetti doesn’t know how Teamsters would react. For that matter, the AP states that marijuana trimmers have an arduous job, and federal law would not step in on their behalf if trimmers happened to be subjected to abusive labor practices. In Oakland, there is an assistant regional director for National Labor Relations Board. This is Michael Leong who states that the category of farm workers may not even contain Teamster cannabis growers. The NLRB would not be in control at all if that is the case.
Ever growing dispensaries for weed with ‘in the shadows’ cultivation
California law has allowed marijuana dispensaries to grow into a booming new business, but existing laws have not fully defined just how cultivation operations like Marjyn Investments LLC should be regulated. Nobody knows what the labor standards need to be although numerous individuals are willing to start working on the change. At this point, one of the only things that is clear as applicants await their permits to open shop is that membership within the Teamsters Union isn’t required in order to operate.
