Over 1.4 million Honda vehicles are recalled already over a shift interlock problem. The Honda recall for 2010 has been announced because of the same problem. This recall covers some 2003 and 2004 Honda Elements, 2003 Accords, and 2003 Civics.
The 2010 Honda recall based on shift interlock
The 2003, 2005, and 2010 Honda recalls have been because of the shift interlock system. If the shifter is not in park, the shift interlock is designed to keep the key from being removed. This could allow the car to roll away and cause accidents. So far, 17 accidents are attributed to this problem. Most often, the problem happens when the vehicle is parked and also the key removed, despite the fact that the shifter has not fully engaged the “park” setting. When the automobiles are left like this, they can roll and cause an accident.
Honda recall because of NHTSA investigation
The shift interlock problem caused the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to open an investigation into Honda. In 2009, the agency upgraded a “recall query” to an “engineering analysis” of the previous recalls. The NHTSA is also evaluating the “timeliness” of Honda recalls. If Honda is found to have not responded “promptly, truthfully and completely” to recall-worthy difficulties, they could face civil fines. There is also an ongoing investigation, related to the expanded 2009 recall over air bag deployment.
Automobiles integrated within the 2010 Honda recall
In September of 2010, the full list of automobiles that have been recalled could be released. There could be about 197,000 Honda Accords, 117,000 Civics, and 69,000 Elements involved in this recall. Previous recalls for the same issue have covered the 1998-2002 Accord, 1999 Odyssey, 1999-2000 Acura TL, 1997-99 Acura CL and 1997-2001 Prelude.
